NEWS: Images from My Current Fine Art Exhibit are Online

There are a couple of places where you can see the images from my current fine art exhibit, "(A) Waiting: Portraits of Baltimore's Industrial Waterfront".

First off, Jason at Gallery 211 has posted the images on his website at www.gallery211.net. The show will be hanging in the gallery until January 3, 2009 so if you want to see the prints up close and personal that's the place. Details of hours and contact information can be found on the same website and Jason is having a Holiday Art Sale on December 17th from 6 to 9pm so that would be a good time to check it out, too.

You can also see the images on my PhotoShelter Archive - one of the features of which is the ability to embed killer little galleries like the one below. Click on the slideshow and you'll be taken straight to those images on the PhotoShelter website. These fine art prints will be available for sale through this site after January 3, 2009. If you're interested in buying an image before then contact Jason.

NEWS: Save the Date - My Photography Show Opening on November 15th

I'm having a showing of some of my recent photography at Gallery 211 in South Baltimore/Federal Hill from November 15th and running through the beginning of 2009. The opening of the show is on Saturday, November 15th from 6:00 - 9:00pm so please stop by if you can make it...I'd love to see you all there! Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

NEWS: Go See the Movie - "Morning Light" Plug and Baltimore Premier Recap

I'm admittedly biased as a sailor and as a friend of one of the movie's 15 young "stars" but the movie was excellent and has something for everyone, sailor and non-sailor alike. "Morning Light" opens nationwide on October 17th. There's a story line - which one would certainly expect from Disney after all - but it's about the people and the impact which this adventure has on this group of young people. Sailing is the vehicle and there's some cool sailing footage and camerawork that takes the viewer on board the boat to get a taste of what it's like to be racing across an ocean on a racing sailboat. As a photographer, I'm really curious to see some more info on "the making of..." to see more details on the filming. I know that the maxi sailing cat, ex-Cheyenne (ex-ex-PlayStation) was re-purposed as a chase boat for filming the crossing and I caught a couple of glimpses of what looked like full-sized video cams mounted on the rail about mid-ship but I'm hoping there's some stuff on the DVD when that comes out in 2009.

As for last week's Baltimore Premier, word on the street is that it was one of the best so far and has set a benchmark of sorts. I was proud to be the official photographer for the event and had a great time watching our homegrown Downtown Sailing Center sailor, Steve Manson, humbly take on the role of movie celebrity. He gave 10 or so interviews during the day on Friday and right to the last word he was friendly and cheerful and engaging. Nice work, Steve.

Leslie and Roy "promoting" the movie. As of the Baltimore stopover, they had been on the road for a week and a half attending various premiers and still had at least another week and a half already scheduled. They were great sports - friendly and energetic to say the least!

NEWS: Official Photog of the Baltimore & Annapolis Premier of Disney's "Morning Light"

That's right, I'll be on hand as the official photographer for the Chesapeake Bay area screenings of "Morning Light," Disney's feature film and true-life documentary about one of the youngest teams to ever compete in the legendary TRANSPAC. The first screenings in the area will be in Annapolis on Thursday, October 9th and in Baltimore on Friday, October 19th.

This should be really cool for a number of reasons:

The local premiers are being hosted by Baltimore's Downtown Sailing Center at the Landmark Harbor East Theatre and by the National Sailing Hall of Fame in Annapolis at the Bow-Tie Cinemas - Annapolis
The proceeds raised from the local premiers will benefit the non-profit sailing programs of the Downtown Sailing Center and Annapolis Community Boating
Several of the sailors from the movie, including Baltimore's own Steve Manson, as well as Roy Disney & Leslie Demeuse Disney, Robbie Haines, and Gary Jobson will be there for discussion, goodwill, and photo opps with selected attendees
This is the first major movie about sailing since "Wind" in 1992

The Thursday night sailing conditions so far this season? Predominantly light...

I mean "light" as in "look at all the pretty reflections" and "check out that boat drifting backwards over the starting line" kinda light. Good for community sailing center racing as there's not much damage that can get done to the fleet when average speeds are sub-1 knot. But not very good for capturing the drama and excitement of one-design sailboat racing with my camera.

Until this past Thursday that is. A sincere "Thanks!" to my good friends on Jester for the 90 seconds of crash that made all of the early season drifters well worth it! Check out the vid below and then see the bottom for a few key stats.

And watch the volume if you're at work!!! I added a few sound effects to go along with the mood...

Great to be back...

...out on the water for another season of sailboat racing on Baltimore's Harbor. Familiar faces, gorgeous weather and a light, dying southeasterly breeze welcomed us all back for the 2008 season. And the dry-sailed boats seemed to have the edge in the light stuff.
